The idea of using Facebook to promote a school library can
be a controversial one because there are often times when things can get taken
out of context and that can create a problem. I was expecting to find several
schools with a Facebook page promoting their library, but I found only a few
that actually belonged to a library. I looked at Estherville Lincoln Central
School Libraries Facebook page to get some ideas of what is out there. Through this
libraries Facebook page librarians can announce community gatherings, ideas for
summer reading, opportunities to fundraise for the campus. I also saw things
like announcements, awards/recognitions, and even campus renovations. I feel this
is a quick way to get information to the parents. On this school’s Facebook
page I scrolled throughout the news feed and didn’t find many comments posted.
Advantages: Have an easy way to communicate with the parents

Disadvantages: Parents can take a small problem out of
context and post negative comments about the school or its staff.
I love the idea of having a Facebook page for the library, but
in my district (PSJA ISD) it is forbidden. We are not allowed to post anything
having to do with our classroom/library on our Facebook page. The district has
something similar called Living Tree in which it posts announcements and
community events to the parents and community. I believe having Living Tree
will help eliminate privacy issues of using Facebook.
